BIG WEDNESDAY
is a drive time radio program on 88.3 Southern FM, a small and diverse community radio station in the southern suburbs of MELBOURNE AUSTRALIA.
Presented by
David McMillan, the program aims to promote good music (you know, the stuff that gets ignored by commercial radio), and provide the odd bit of community information. The music mix is aimed mainly at people in their 30's 40's and 50's, who like me have grown up listening to music and have maintained a bit of an interest, despite the interference of life in it's many facets;  children, work, a sense that we need to be 'responsible and mature'... whatever that may mean.
Maybe like me you spent far too many nights in bars drinkin beer and havin a good time, listening to punk and new wave, and came to the sounds of new country etc from that point of view, but you have mellowed (well maybe a little), and still want to hear some good sounds. Or maybe you were there from the start and still want to hear good music.
Or, you just might enjoy listening to something different, something new but with the odd classic thrown in for good measure. I like to feature a fair bit of independent music, mostly Melbourne stuff (let's face it Melbourne is the place to be for music in Australia) but I have very eclectic taste so you might hear anything from singer/songwriters and roots music to alt.country, to roots, to blues, to soul and funk, and even on occasion some local hip hop artists.

BUT the show is not just about music. We have interviews with people doing things in our community. It could be an exhibition, a play, a fundraising event - just about anything (but interesting I hope).

REGULAR CONTRIBUTORS

PETER HARRINGTON
Peter is our man about town. Representing the Legal Leisure and Business Precinct of The City of Melbourne, he is out there socialising and sipping champagne with the best. All so he can inform us of "What's on in Melbourne"  Peter is a lively and interesting character and his segment always generates a lot of interest. He is a particularly good source of information on lots of FREE events around town.

JILL COOK

Every week Jill is out there doing the work that we just don't have time for. Let's face it, life is increasingly expensive, and who wants to risk their hard earned heading off to see a movie that is crap. Jill reviews all the latest movies and brings us reviews of only the best. Jill is an artist in her own right, and brings that sensibility to her reviews. Find out what's worth seeing by tuning in every Wednesday at 5:30pm.

WHAT'S FOR TEA?

Di Wiseman is a new member of the Big Wednesday Team, as of June '05. We are very pleased to have her on board. Di will be presenting the news and commentary as well as a new segment 'What's For Tea?' talking about food and cooking. Di has a lively personality, a passion for food and wine and is a great cook! So it will be great listening.

INTERVIEWS

spur me on

Over the last 3 or 4 years of the program I've interviewed many Australian musicians of incredible talent, and from a range of musical styles. I guess it would be hard to categorise, but maybe 'roots' fits the bill to a degree, of course that includes  blues, country, folk, singer/songwriter, jazz, world, pop, rockabilly - shit, just about everything. The main criteria I apply is that it has to be GOOD. And DAMN but there's some fine music in this town!
Click on the links below to read transcripts of some interviews. I do these manually when I have the time, and I'm not the fastest typist, so...
